“I am so grateful to have been raised in the beautiful town of Fairhope, Alabama. I was born with the desire to create, but living in a town of artists and patrons of the arts, definitely further encouraged and ignited my passion. I graduated from The University of Alabama in 2011 with a degree in Studio Art with a concentration in painting. Following my graduation, I studied for a year in the graduate painting program at The Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta. I live in Birmingham with my husband Matthew.

Brushes come in all shapes and sizes

I work in oils and paint on canvas or wood panel. I work most often in an abstract expressionistic style. I let paint be paint. Experimentation plays an instrumental role in my work. I rely on intentional and intuitive mark making to create my paintings.

Piecing artwork together- the many steps.

I’m constantly discovering new color combinations. Each color has a personality and I enjoy encouraging them to interact. I let what exists on a canvas dictate what’s to come. Being open to any end result allows my work to evolve.”

Amanda Petro's work is all about texture.

I get really attached to my art supplies. Some of them have been with me since college. I love that the marks could never be recreated. Each splatter and drip is a memory of a previous painting.

A work in progress by Amanda Petro

Notice the colors peeking through the stripes? I paint my entire canvas in acrylic before I use oils. This process is labor intensive and time consuming. Some people have asked why paint the entire canvas if you’re just going to cover it up? That pop of red between the orange and mango is precisely why it’s worth it.

Laying down and pulling away of color adds depth.

Spend time mixing your paint. It makes such a huge difference! I had a professor in college who totally forbid us from using paint directly from the tube. I learned to use interesting paint combinations to create new colors.

Loading the brush with gloriously thick oils!

Did you know that my paintings take 2-4 months to dry? Each piece is full of movement and dimension. I LOVE color. I spend hours mixing paint. I am using a traditional painting method to create a totally unique contemporary work of art. I am so grateful for the opportunity to create daily!”

The final result- gorgeous!
