Coming from a family of artists, Marcie Coltman has always been driven to creative expression. Originally her passion to create led her into the hair artistry field. She quickly realized trying to appease people’s expectations and interpretations of aesthetic beauty was not where she would flourish, so she turned her attention to the canvas.

“Creating art on canvas allows me to fully express myself without the constrictions of complying to societal norms of visual beauty,” says Coltman. “For me, art is about the emotion it provokes within the viewer. When I stand in front of my easel with a paintbrush in my hand, I become so immersed that time seems to stand still. It is often the only place I feel calmness from anxiety; it helps me practice mindfulness as I become fully aware of my senses. Once I put the first stroke down, excitement builds as I anticipate the direction that the canvas wants to take me. A blank canvas is like the beginning of a new day: full of hope and aspiration, a fresh start.”

Coltman’s style of work is best described as contemporary abstract expressionism. Starting each piece by establishing a color palette, Coltman creates color studies on paper, which helps her define and refine her color schemes. Applying strokes of paint loosely and abstractly, she pays close attention to the piece’s overall balance, tone, and contrast. Adding strokes of graphite and oil pastels throughout the process adds a touch of chaos, mystery, and drama to the paintings. From afar, Coltman’s paintings look soft and feminine; but up-close, viewers can explore the hidden edginess and eccentricity.
